Geneva Lake's Holiday Season Runs Through One Williams Bay Address

Sheltered limestone entry with an oak door, bronze-framed window and dried hydrangea flowers beside broad stone steps.

"Our boats had never run in the winter, so we didn't really have a lot of things we have in place now," Ellen Burling, general manager of Lake Geneva Cruise Line, told Visit Lake Geneva last November. She was describing the first Santa Cruise in 2017, which she said the company "very much slapped together."

Nine seasons later, the event fills a heated hall, a marina and a restaurant on the north shore. It has also moved the lake's holiday activity away from downtown Lake Geneva. From late November through December, most of what happens on the water starts at 1 Liechty Drive in Williams Bay. If you know how that one address runs from day to day, the season is much easier to plan.

One Address Carries the Season

Lake Geneva Cruise Line runs from the Riviera Docks in downtown Lake Geneva from May through October. In late November and December it moves to its winter harbor in Williams Bay. That harbor sits at 1 Liechty Drive, which the cruise line describes as "the home of Gage Marine and PIER 290 restaurant." Gage Marine says it rebuilt the marina and the Cruise Line Winter Harbor on that property and opened PIER 290 there in 2012.

During the holidays, three things share that address:

  • The Santa Cruise. It's a 40-minute tour on an enclosed, heated vintage boat. You pass more than 15 lighted displays along the shoreline and then reach Santa's Hideaway, where Santa reads the names of children on board from his "Nice List."
  • The Christmas Festival. The 531 Fund runs it in the PIER 290 Boat Showroom from Nov. 27 through Dec. 30. Admission is free. Hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 4 to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • PIER 290. During Santa Cruise season, kids eat free and get a treat when they show their "Nice" boarding pass.

The three are tied together. Cruise passengers pick up boarding passes at the Christmas Festival ticket booth at least 30 minutes before departure. The cruise line asks guests not to go straight to the boat, because a crew member walks each group down to board. So every cruise ticket also brings people into the festival hall, and the restaurant is a few steps away.

The 2026 Calendar Starts Earlier and Ends Sooner

This year's schedule is different from last year's at both ends. In the Visit Lake Geneva interview, Burling said the 2025 season started the day after Thanksgiving and ran through Jan. 3. It used two boats, the Lady of the Lake and the Grand Belle, which carry up to 175 passengers each. The 2026 schedule looks like this:

2025 season 2026 season
First sailing Day after Thanksgiving Friday, Nov. 20
Last sailing Jan. 3 Dec. 30
Boats named Lady of the Lake, Grand Belle Lady of the Lake, Grand Belle, Majestic
Pre-Thanksgiving discount None described 25% off Nov. 20 and 21

The preview weekend is the clearest sign of where the cruise line wants demand to go. Bookings for Friday, Nov. 20, and Saturday, Nov. 21, are discounted automatically at checkout. On the booking calendar those two nights show $28, while Friday through Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend show $37. The calendar shows no sailings from Monday, Nov. 23, through Thanksgiving Day. The festival's public run also starts on Nov. 27, a week after the first sailing.

The season is popular enough to need this kind of planning. Burling told Visit Lake Geneva that about half of the 25,000 annual rides had already been booked when they spoke, in late November 2025, and that the company expected record attendance over 35 days of cruising.

Weeknights Are When the Harbor Works Best

The cruise line's own Santa Cruise FAQ says weekend nights sell out first, and it charges a lower price on weekday cruises to give them "a more relaxed atmosphere." In last year's interview, Burling also pointed customers toward weekday dates because weekends book first.

Parking makes the bigger difference. On weekdays you can park free in the upper-level lot at Gage Marine and PIER 290. On weekends, guests have to park for free at Williams Bay High School, 500 West Geneva Street, and ride a free shuttle to the Christmas Festival. The cruise line asks shuttle riders to reach the high school at least 45 minutes before departure. Shuttles run from 3:45 to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and from 3:45 to 9 p.m. on Sundays. They depend on ticket demand and may change. The 2026 shuttle calendar lists specific dates, and in November the first shuttle days are Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 27 through 29.

Put together, a weeknight visit runs like this:

  1. Park in the upper lot at 1 Liechty Drive.
  2. Check in at the Christmas Festival ticket booth at least 30 minutes before your sailing. The building is enclosed and heated, and you can browse the charity booths while you wait.
  3. Take the 40-minute cruise past the shoreline displays.
  4. Walk back to PIER 290 for dinner, where children with a "Nice" boarding pass eat free.

On a weekend, the same evening also includes the drive to the high school, the shuttle ride and an earlier arrival time. The cruise line warns that even with heated cabins, "you are on a boat in winter in Wisconsin." Dress for the walk to and from your car, the festival hall and the boat. If you need to cancel, you get a full refund up to 48 hours before departure. If the cruise line cancels a tour for weather, it offers a full refund or a new date.

On accessibility, all three boats can be boarded, but their restrooms can't accommodate a wheelchair. PIER 290 has accessible restrooms, and the cruise line asks to hear about special needs ahead of time.

Saturday at 8:20 Is for Adults Only

Weekends are busier, but one Saturday sailing is set aside for adults. Every Saturday from Nov. 28 through Dec. 26, the 8:20 p.m. cruise is an adults-only karaoke Santa Cruise for guests 21 and older. It lasts an hour, longer than the standard 40-minute tour. No bar operates on the boats, and alcohol and coolers aren't allowed on board. Drinks for this cruise are bought at Santa's Bar inside the Christmas Festival building. The cruise line suggests it for friends, family or colleagues, which makes it a ready-made December outing for a small group.

Where the Raffle Money Goes

The festival hall is one of the few parts of the season where your spending stays mostly in the area. The 531 Fund takes its name from the first three digits of the area's ZIP codes. It has supported local charities since 2016 and was formerly called Santa Cause. At the Christmas Festival, participating charities design themed booths, each with its own raffle prize package, and guests drop their raffle tickets at the booths they want to win.

Visit Lake Geneva's 2026 listing names six beneficiaries:

  • Aurora Health Care Foundation
  • Inspiration Ministries / Inspired Coffee
  • Norman B Barr Camp
  • SMILES
  • Walworth County Adult Special Olympics
  • Water Safety Patrol

Visit Lake Geneva reported in November 2025 that the organization had raised $1 million for charity since Santa Cruise began. Admission to the festival is free, so you can browse the booths without a cruise ticket.

Two Dates Away From the Bay

Two other holiday events take place away from Williams Bay. Both have fixed dates and fit around a weeknight at the harbor.

The 51st annual Lake Geneva Electric Christmas Parade steps off at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, from the intersection of Williams and Marshall streets in downtown Lake Geneva. If you want to enter a float, registration closes Nov. 6, about two weeks after this post goes up. Grand Geneva's free Gingerbread House Walk opens at 7036 Grand Geneva Way. Displays run from Nov. 22 through Dec. 31, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

The cruise line's season ends on Dec. 30, and the festival closes the same day. Grand Geneva's gingerbread displays stay open one more day, through Dec. 31.
